Since 1924, a Christmas tree has stood beneath the marble arch in Washington Square Park. Framed by the arch and Fifth Avenue beyond, it’s one of the most iconic tree views in New York, and the Christmas Eve sing-along here is a beloved Greenwich Village tradition.
The 2026 lighting is expected on December 10, and the traditional Christmas Eve caroling starts at 5 p.m. on December 24.

Christmas Eve Under the Arch
On Christmas Eve, the Washington Square Association hosts a community carol sing at the tree, usually with a brass ensemble. Song sheets are handed out and it’s open to everyone. It’s one of the most heartwarming free things to do in the city on December 24 (see more in our Christmas Eve in NYC guide).
Nearby
Greenwich Village is great for an evening wander: the brownstone streets west of the park are decorated, and there are cozy bars and cafés everywhere. The Union Square Holiday Market is a 10-minute walk north.
History of the Washington Square Tree
The Washington Square Association has put up a tree beneath the arch since 1924, making it one of the city’s oldest public Christmas tree traditions. The marble arch itself, designed by Stanford White, was built in the 1890s to commemorate the centennial of George Washington’s inauguration.
Exploring Greenwich Village at Christmas
The streets west of the park, around Bleecker, Bank and Perry Streets, are lined with brownstones and townhouses decorated with wreaths and garlands. It’s one of the most charming neighborhoods for an evening stroll, with cozy restaurants and bars along the way.
Tree Lighting Tips
- Arrive 30–45 minutes before the lighting for a good view.
- Dress warmly; you’ll be standing outside after dark.
- Follow the organizers’ social media on the day for any weather changes.
- Stay a few minutes after the countdown, when crowds thin and the tree is easier to photograph.
