Every December, the trees on the Park Avenue medians, from 54th Street up to 97th Street, are lit at once. The tradition began in 1945 to honor Americans who died in World War II and continues as a memorial to all who gave their lives for the country.
The 2026 ceremony is on Sunday, December 6, 6:30–7:30 p.m., with the gathering outside Brick Presbyterian Church at Park Avenue and 91st Street.

What to Expect
It’s a short, reflective ceremony with carols, a brief service and the lighting, followed by the long line of illuminated trees stretching down the avenue. It’s less of a show than a neighborhood tradition. Afterward, the best views are looking south from the median islands around 90th Street.
Upper East Side Holiday Ideas
Pair it with the Bloomingdale’s windows, the Gingerbread NYC exhibit at the Museum of the City of New York or the Met’s Christmas tree and Neapolitan crèche.
History
The Park Avenue tree lighting began in 1945, at the end of World War II, when families of servicemen and women lit trees along the avenue’s medians in memory of those who had died. The ceremony at Brick Presbyterian Church continues the tradition, honoring all Americans who have given their lives in service, and the trees stay lit through the holiday season.
Seeing the Trees
Once lit, the trees run for about 40 blocks up the Park Avenue medians. The view looking south from the Upper East Side, with the lights stretching toward the MetLife Building, is a quiet, classic New York holiday sight.
Tree Lighting Tips
- Arrive 30–45 minutes before the lighting for a good view.
- Dress warmly; you’ll be standing outside after dark.
- Follow the organizers’ social media on the day for any weather changes.
- Stay a few minutes after the countdown, when crowds thin and the tree is easier to photograph.
