For much of the 20th century, a “Flying Santa” dropped gifts by plane to lighthouse keepers and their families along the Northeast coast. Fire Island Lighthouse recreates the tradition each December, with Santa arriving by historic aircraft. It’s one of the most unusual and charming Santa visits on Long Island.
In 2025 the event was held on Saturday, December 13, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Expect a mid-December Saturday in 2026; check the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society for the date.

About Fire Island Lighthouse
Fire Island Lighthouse, completed in 1858, stands near the western end of Fire Island, a barrier island off Long Island’s South Shore. It’s now a museum run by the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society, and its black-and-white stripes are one of Long Island’s best-known landmarks.
About the Flying Santa Tradition
The Flying Santa tradition began in 1929, when pilot Bill Wincapaw dropped packages of gifts to lighthouse keepers and their families, who often lived in remote, isolated places at Christmas. The tradition grew into an organization that continued the deliveries for decades along the New England and East Coast shores.
Tips
- Park at Robert Moses State Park Field 5 and walk the boardwalk to the lighthouse (about 0.75 miles).
- The walk is exposed; bring warm, windproof layers.
