A Nutcracker With a New York Twist
Instead of a German home, The Yorkville Nutcracker sets the story in 1890s New York. The party takes place in a Gilded Age home, and the journey visits landmarks of the era, including Gracie Mansion, the Crystal Palace and a wintry Central Park, with the classic Tchaikovsky score. It’s a fun way to discover New York history while enjoying a holiday ballet.
The Nutcracker Story
On Christmas Eve, young Clara (called Marie in some productions) receives a nutcracker from her mysterious godfather, Drosselmeyer. At midnight the toys come to life, the Nutcracker leads toy soldiers against the Mouse King, and he becomes a prince who takes her through a snowy forest to the Land of Sweets, where the Sugar Plum Fairy welcomes them with dances from around the world. Tchaikovsky’s score, first performed in St. Petersburg in 1892, includes some of the most recognizable music in classical ballet, from the “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” to the “Waltz of the Flowers.”
Tips for Families
- Read the story or listen to the music with children beforehand, so they know what to look for.
- Choose a matinee for younger kids.
- Arrive early to find seats and settle in before the overture.
- Every attendee typically needs a ticket; check the venue’s policy for babies.
