Long before Instagram, New Yorkers made a holiday ritual out of walking Fifth Avenue to see the store windows. The tradition goes back to the 1870s, when Macy’s first dressed its windows for Christmas, and today the city’s department stores and luxury brands spend months building displays that range from animated storybook scenes to full-blown art installations. Best of all, it’s completely free.

This guide covers the best holiday window displays in NYC for 2026, when they’re unveiled, a walking route that links them together, and tips for seeing them without the crowds. For the rest of the season, see our list of the best Christmas things to do in NYC.

Quick answer: NYC’s most famous holiday windows are at Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, Macy’s Herald Square and Bloomingdale’s. Saks unveils its 2026 windows and light show on Monday, November 23, and most other stores reveal theirs in mid-to-late November. The windows stay up until early January and are free to see. Most of them line Fifth Avenue between 49th and 58th Streets.

The Big Four Department Stores

Saks Fifth Avenue

The showstopper of the season. After dark, the entire façade of Saks becomes a synchronized light-and-music show, and at street level, six animated windows bring New York holiday scenes to life. It sits directly across Fifth Avenue from the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, so you can see both in one stop.

For 2026, Saks’s holiday campaign is called Main Character Energy. The six center windows take viewers on an animated, festive journey through New York City, and the gallery windows show a classic New York holiday shopping trip. Inside, the Saks Holiday Market adds a life-size Santa and dancing penguins.

  • Where: 611 Fifth Avenue, between 49th and 50th Streets
  • When: Windows and light show unveiled Monday, November 23, 2026, running into early January
  • Light show: Every few minutes after dark. Last season, it ran every 10 minutes from 5 to 11 p.m.
  • Cost: Free
  • Best for: Everyone, especially first-time visitors
  • Tip: Watch the light show from the Channel Gardens at Rockefeller Center for the best framing, or from the steps of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, a block north, for more breathing room.

Bergdorf Goodman

For many New Yorkers, Bergdorf’s windows are the best in the city. They’re less about animated toys and more about art: elaborate, hand-built scenes with dazzling detail, made by a team of artisans who work on them for most of the year. Last season’s windows, The Bergdorf Soirée, imagined a different party in each of nine windows, from a Mad Hatter’s bash to a masquerade gala, built from paper sculpture, mosaics and hand-painted neon.

  • Where: 754 Fifth Avenue at 58th Street (women’s store), with more windows at the men’s store across the street
  • When: Usually unveiled around November 20, on view into early January (2026 theme to be announced)
  • Cost: Free
  • Best for: Art and design lovers, photographers
  • Tip: Look closely. The best details are tiny, so it’s worth visiting on a quiet weekday when you can stand at the glass without being rushed.

Macy’s Herald Square

The store where the holiday window tradition began, and still the best for kids. Macy’s animated Broadway windows are classic and storybook-like, with moving figures, music and characters. Last season’s windows celebrated Macy’s own holiday history, from Santa’s first arrival in 1861 to the first Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1924. Inside, Santaland is on the eighth floor.

  • Where: 151 West 34th Street, at Broadway and Sixth Avenue
  • When: Usually unveiled the week before Thanksgiving, on view into early January (2026 theme to be announced)
  • Cost: Free
  • Best for: Families with young children
  • Tip: The most famous windows face Broadway and 34th Street. Pair your visit with Santaland, which opens the day after Thanksgiving and requires a free reservation.

Bloomingdale’s

A short detour east of Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdale’s flagship goes big on themed windows, often built around a film, musical or fashion collaboration. Last season, it covered an entire side of the building in Burberry check, with armored knights in Burberry scarves posed in medieval holiday scenes.

  • Where: 1000 Third Avenue, at Lexington Avenue and 59th Street
  • When: Usually unveiled in mid-November, on view into early January (2026 theme to be announced)
  • Cost: Free
  • Best for: Fans of pop culture and fashion collaborations
  • Tip: Bloomingdale’s is about a 10-minute walk east of Bergdorf Goodman, so add it to the end of a Fifth Avenue walk.

More Fifth Avenue Windows and Facades

Between the big department stores, Fifth Avenue’s luxury flagships and landmark buildings add their own holiday displays. Themes change every year, but these are reliably worth a look.

Tiffany & Co.

Tiffany’s flagship, known as The Landmark, dresses its Fifth Avenue windows in its signature blue, often with snowy scenes, sparkling miniatures and plenty of jewelry. Last season’s love-themed windows featured glowing snowballs, floating doves and wrapped blue boxes.

  • Where: 727 Fifth Avenue at 57th Street
  • Tip: Combine it with Bergdorf Goodman, one block north.

Cartier

Cartier’s historic mansion is one of the most photographed buildings on Fifth Avenue during the holidays, when it’s lit up and decorated like a giant gift.

  • Where: 653 Fifth Avenue at 52nd Street
  • Tip: It’s two blocks north of Saks, and especially striking after dark.

FAO Schwarz and American Girl

Two toy stores at Rockefeller Center with festive windows and even more festive interiors. FAO Schwarz is famous for its giant floor piano, and American Girl decorates for the season. Both are a hit with kids.

  • Where: FAO Schwarz at 30 Rockefeller Plaza; American Girl at 75 Rockefeller Plaza
  • Tip: Visit right when they open on weekdays. Both get very crowded in December.

Nordstrom

Nordstrom’s flagship on 57th Street has embraced playful, interactive holiday concepts in recent years. Last season’s displays included bright pink and purple windows and an LED tunnel at the entrance.

  • Where: 225 West 57th Street at Broadway
  • Tip: It’s near Columbus Circle, so pair it with the Columbus Circle Holiday Market.

Other luxury flagships

Around 57th Street and Fifth Avenue, brands such as Louis Vuitton, Dior and Gucci often unveil elaborate holiday windows or wrap their facades in festive designs. Last season, Gucci’s windows took the form of a giant advent calendar. Themes change every year, so take a slow walk along this stretch to see what’s new.

Holiday Windows Walking Route

This route covers the major windows in about two to three hours at a relaxed pace, including the Rockefeller tree. It’s about 2.5 miles in total. Start in the late afternoon so you reach Saks after dark for the light show.

  1. Macy’s Herald Square (34th Street and Broadway): Start with the animated Broadway windows.
  2. Empire State Building (Fifth Avenue and 34th Street): Walk east to see its holiday-lit spire and festive lobby.
  3. Bryant Park Winter Village (Sixth Avenue at 42nd Street): Head north for hot chocolate and the holiday market. See our Bryant Park Winter Village guide.
  4. Rockefeller Center (Fifth Avenue between 49th and 50th Streets): Walk up Fifth Avenue to the Channel Gardens, the tree and the rink, with FAO Schwarz and American Girl nearby.
  5. Saks Fifth Avenue (Fifth Avenue at 50th Street): Turn around from the Channel Gardens for the light show and windows.
  6. St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Cartier (Fifth Avenue, 50th to 52nd Streets): Continue north past the cathedral to the Cartier mansion.
  7. Tiffany & Co. and the 57th Street flagships (Fifth Avenue at 57th Street): See the luxury windows clustered around this corner.
  8. Bergdorf Goodman (Fifth Avenue at 58th Street): Save one of the best for last.
  9. Optional: Bloomingdale’s (Lexington Avenue at 59th Street): A 10-minute walk east if you have energy left.

Shorter version: If you only have an hour, start at Rockefeller Center and walk north on Fifth Avenue from Saks to Bergdorf Goodman. You’ll see the tree, the light show and the best luxury windows in about eight blocks.

Finish nearby: End your walk with a skate at Wollman Rink in Central Park, a short walk from Bergdorf’s.

Best Times to See the Windows

  • Weekday mornings: The quietest time for window-gazing, with space to see the details up close.
  • After dark: The windows glow and the Saks light show is running. Sunset in December is around 4:30 p.m.
  • Late evening: After 9 p.m., the crowds on Fifth Avenue thin out noticeably, and the windows stay lit.
  • Sundays in December: In recent years, the city has closed part of Fifth Avenue to cars on Sundays in December, making it much easier to walk. Check the city’s announcements for this year’s schedule.
  • Times to avoid: Weekend afternoons and evenings in mid-December, when sidewalks can become shoulder-to-shoulder.

Practical Tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes. The full route covers about 2.5 miles of sidewalk.
  • Follow the crowd flow. On busy nights, police may set up one-way pedestrian lanes around Rockefeller Center and Saks.
  • Keep belongings close. Fifth Avenue is packed in December, so keep bags zipped and in front of you.
  • Warm up inside. Department stores make good warming stops, and they have restrooms, which are hard to find in Midtown.
  • Take photos without glare. Hold your phone close to the glass and angle it slightly to avoid reflections.
  • Be patient at Macy’s. The most popular windows can have a line at peak times, but it usually moves quickly.
