Across Madison Avenue from the back of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the Lotte New York Palace decorates the courtyard of its 1880s Villard Mansion with a towering Christmas tree, wreaths and arches of light. It’s one of the most elegant free holiday sights in Midtown and only two blocks from Rockefeller Center, yet far less crowded.
Decorations go up in late November 2026 (reported from November 23), with the courtyard tree lighting reported for December 1, 2026. The display stays through the holiday season.

Why It’s Worth the Detour
The Villard Houses are a set of Italian Renaissance-style brownstone mansions wrapped around a U-shaped courtyard. With the tree in the center, garlands across the gates and the hotel tower rising behind, it’s one of the most photographed holiday corners of New York. It’s also the hotel whose courtyard has appeared in plenty of movies and TV shows set in the city.

About the Villard Houses
The Lotte New York Palace incorporates the Villard Houses, a group of 1880s mansions designed by McKim, Mead & White and built for railroad financier Henry Villard. Their U-shaped courtyard on Madison Avenue is one of Midtown’s most elegant spaces, and in December it becomes a beautifully lit holiday setting.
