The Rockefeller Center tree gets the TV cameras, but New York has tree lightings in every borough, most of them free, festive and far less crowded. Here’s the full 2026 calendar.

Manhattan
Rockefeller Center — Wednesday, December 2
The big one, broadcast live, with musical performances before the switch-on. Viewing areas fill hours ahead and are closed off by police; most locals watch on TV and visit the tree on another night.
Bryant Park
A friendlier ceremony with a skating show at Winter Village.
New York Stock Exchange
A tradition since 1923, in front of the Exchange’s columns.
South Street Seaport
Cobblestones, ships and the Brooklyn Bridge.
Park Avenue
A memorial lighting of the trees on the median from 54th to 97th Streets.
Washington Square Park
The tree beneath the arch, plus caroling on Christmas Eve.
Lincoln Square (Dante Park)
The Upper West Side’s tree lighting across from Lincoln Center in early December.
Brooklyn
DUMBO’s tree lighting under the Manhattan Bridge archway is the borough’s coziest. Grand Army Plaza hosts a huge menorah lighting during Hanukkah (Dec 4–12, 2026).
The Bronx
The Arthur Avenue Retail Market area lights its tree in Ciccarone Park on December 5, 2026, a great excuse for cannoli.
Staten Island
Historic Richmond Town’s tree lighting is on December 4, 2026 in the restored village.

How to Enjoy a Tree Lighting
Most New York tree lightings follow the same pattern: an hour or two of live music, school choirs or dance performances, a visit from Santa, hot cocoa, then a countdown as darkness falls. They’re free, family-friendly and over quickly, so it’s easy to fit one into an evening.
- Arrive 30–60 minutes early for a good view; for Rockefeller Center, much earlier.
- Bring cash for vendors at neighborhood events.
- Check the weather and social media on the day; events are occasionally moved for rain or wind.
- Stay after the lighting: crowds leave quickly, and the tree looks best in a quieter moment.
Rockefeller Center Lighting Night: What to Know
The Rockefeller Center ceremony is a live television event, and the viewing areas around the plaza are controlled by the NYPD. Spaces fill hours in advance, there are no restrooms in the viewing areas, and once you leave you can’t get back in. The streets around Rockefeller Center close in the afternoon.
Our advice: watch the ceremony on TV and visit the tree on another night, ideally early in the morning or late in the evening. Or go to the Bryant Park lighting the evening before, which is far more relaxed.
Best Lightings for Families
- DUMBO — a cozy neighborhood party under the Manhattan Bridge.
- Historic Richmond Town — a small-town feel in a restored village.
- Bryant Park — a skating show plus the Winter Village shops.
Most Atmospheric
- Park Avenue — a quiet, moving memorial lighting.
- Washington Square — the tree under the arch, with caroling on Christmas Eve.
- The New York Stock Exchange — a tradition since 1923.
Trees You Can Visit Anytime
Beyond the outdoor trees, some of the city’s most beautiful are indoors: the Met’s Neapolitan Baroque tree, the AMNH Origami Tree and the courtyard tree at the Lotte New York Palace.
